"I have seen the things that were brought to the King from the new golden land... for I saw among them wonderful works of art and I marveled at the subtle genius of men in distant lands."
These words were written in 1520 by the great German artist, Albrch Durher. The new golden land was Mexico; the " works of art" had been given by the Aztec emperor Montezuma to Herman Cortez and sent by sea to Charles V, the King of Spain. Because their civilizations evolved late in the pre-Conquest history, the Aztec were able to adopt the craft skills and cultural traits of an even great civilization... the Maya.
This video is a study of Mayan Art, its subject matter and historical
development. Today centuries after the Spanish conquest., nearly
sixty indigenous Indian peoples still live in Central America, many
of whom retain their own customs, folk art and craft traditions.
Mayan Culture: The influence of religion upon art was never more unmistakable than in the case of the Maya.
The documentary "The Art of the Maya" delves into the importance religion played on the development of this great civilization. Thus religion enriches art and makes it permanent.
